The AP is divided into three parts or pars: the pars tuberalis, pars intermedia and pars distalis. The posterior pituitary develops as an extension of the hypothalamus and its cells (known as the magno-cellular neuro-secretory cells have its cell bodies in the hypothalamus and its axons projecting into the posterior pituitary. The anterior pituitary (adenohypophysis) arises from the oral ectoderm while the posterior pituitary (neurohypophysis) originates from the neuro-ectoderm.
